Who we are

 

The International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) supports, represents and works to strengthen professional associations of midwives throughout the world. There are currently 132 Midwives Associations, representing 113 countries across every continent. ICM is organised in six regions:

 

  1. Africa (Anglophone and Francophone)
  2. Americas (North America & Caribbean and Latin America)
  3. Western Pacific
  4. Eastern Mediterranean
  5. South East Asia
  6. Europe (Northern, Central and Southern) 

 

Together these associations represent 500,000 midwives globally. ICM is an accredited non-governmental organisation and represents midwives and midwifery to organisations worldwide to achieve common goals in the care of mothers and newborns.

 

ICM works closely with the WHO, UNFPA and other UN Agencies; global professional health care organisations including the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO), the International Pediatric Association (IPA), the International Council of Nurses (ICN), non-governmental organisations; bilateral and civil society groups.

 

 

ICM Triennial Congresses

 

The latest, 31st Triennial Congress took place in Toronto, Canada from 18-22 June. Over 4,000 midwives, partners, stakeholders in midwifery, and civil society organizations attended the Congress, which was a lightining rod for education, information-sharing, networking and strategiziation of the role that midwives will play over the coming years in the sexual, reproductive,maternal and newborn health space. 

 

The Congress is a leading forum for midwifery with the aim of achieving progress in the care of pregnant women, mothers, newborns and their families. A rich selection of experts in the field of midwifery and global health presented during the Congress.

 

The next, 32nd Triennial Congress will place in Bali, Indonesia,  from 21-25 June 2020, and will be focusing on the theme of ‘Midwives of the world: delivering the future’. The Indonesian Midwives Association (IBI) will ensure the warmest welcome, as will the people of Bali.
